Skagit Valley Tulip Festival 2011

My friend and I made it up to the Tulips on what might have been the brightest day in April…

It took 2ish hours to get to just the one garden once we left the freeway…so alas, we made it a good one…

Some may remember images from my last trip in 2008 – I was taking my then new Rebel XTiand lenses for a tour, to figure out how to use them…the difference this time, less time, less fields, more sun, less clouds, no droplets, more sun(yeah, it was bright!), and oh yeah, I actually now know how to use a camera, lol…I took my 5d, my 15mm fish, 70-200 2.8 and my 50 1.4 to see what we could see this time. I tried to stick with the extremes at 200, and 15mm wide open at 2.8 – figured noone wants to see just another flower portrait – but eh, they are pretty flowers, so…Anyway, because it was so bright, I figured, extreme perspective would be able to capture some drama in what would otherwise be, just more flower pictures – though, that is what they are! And that’s all ok:)

When I say I know how to use (now) – it sounds silly – and I was really happy with my 2008 images – you might even like some of them better than this years! (and that’s ok:) ┬áBut I barely knew how to use the focusing system, didn’t quite understand what I would get through the various lenses (10-22, 50, 100 w/my 2008 rebel)…I like to think I had an eye and a bit of style – which has always been a little like my cooking – by feel and senses…These days, new gear, and I at least in my head a bit more of a sense of – hey I know what I’m after – how to shoot it, and well, never forget to just enjoy it.

So with all of that said – here are some of the colors admist the brightest sun – gotta love the pretty!

Wow, that first shot is breathtaking! And you’re really making me want to get a fisheye :)

As someone who also only been shooting for a few concerts, and does mostly concerts… I loved reading this post. I’m an absolute dumb-dumb when it comes to taking photos outside, but I’ll be working on that.
You did a really fantastic job!

    • Elisa Sherman says:

Thanks! I like to take pictures – but sometimes it’s hard to shoot landscapes etc – when what I focus so much on is people – it’s like, where are all the people, lol…

It’s nice to not have to push the ISO though;)

re fisheye – I love it – I try not to over use it – but it’s just fun.

Apparently I don’t know how to profreed before I leave comments.
What I meant to say, is that I’ve only been shooting for a few YEARS, and mostly concerts. lol.
I’ve been on the lookout for you for awhile now…. I’m friends with Kirk and Jason. One day we’ll be at the same show, and I’ll say hi :)

        • Elisa Sherman says:

lol – I knew what you meant…I checked out your site – nice work…

I don’t make it to too many gigs these days, but if you see me, definitely say hi – I feel like I’ve met most everyone that is shooting, but obviously not! lol:)

          • Rhianon says:

Thanks, and I will! I’m hard of hearing, so if I don’t say much more than hi…. that’s why. But hopefully I’ll get to talk your ear off, I don’t know ANY other woman photographers. So if you ever want to chat, feel free to drop an email :)

          • Elisa Sherman says:

Ha:) it’s hard to chat at gigs – so I get it:)

I know several local shooters that are gals but maybe we’re outnumbered? Probably also depends on the gigs – sometimes I am the only one at a show and I read on twitter that all the togs are at some other hot show lol…

  2. Tammy says:

    Elisa,
I absolutely love your tulip pics, both from 2008 and current. I could look at them for hours. Did you get any this year of the mountains behind? How can I view more?? Because I know there are more:)

  3. Elisa Sherman says:

Tammy – I don’t know if I got any great ones w/the mountains…the full set I processed is on the slideshow at the bottom there…

Vicky probably got some w/the mountains…we were late getting up there…it was a gorgeous day…
