White Reaper opens at Neumos in Seattle 6-13-2015

Oh my…first post of the year at practically the half way point…oops! Well, I suppose I will start off with something fun:) I got the chance to come out to Neumos to help support my friends nephew’s band White Reaper. They were on tour here opening for Electric Six. So fun – and loud. Makes me think I might need to get back out there more…we’ll see! It was a family affair as my friends sister, the lead singers mom, was also came out here to Seattle for the show…good times.

They are fun young band…good looking young guys that clearly enjoy playing music. I hope to see and hear more from them – their newest record ‘…does it again’ drops this month from Polyvinyl records.

…my camera heads to big apple in a couple days, so likely images from the concrete jungle will follow next week, and then Pride the following weekend at the end of the month – rainbows will abound!

Noise for the Needy 2014, Farewell Festival

Noise for the Needy has been raising money via this awesome local festival for 10 years. A great run, for many great causes along the way. So many great bands, great people, and a great event. I am so happy to have captured it via images for the last 7 years, since 2008. It’s been an honor to have photographed 7 festivals, 15 shows altogether, and too many bands to count. It’s been a special thing for me. Even after I stopped shooting music regularly in early 2012, I kept coming out for this event. For me it was that perfect confluence of art, creativity, and community coming together.

For a look back, check – Noise for the Needy blogs from 2008-2013 – 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Given the finale, I can’t help but bring back some of my favorite images from years past.

I have loved shooting this festival…and I will miss it and all that it represents. I am so happy I got to be even a small part of it, capturing the moments; and a bit sad it’s all over.

But alas, it’s all in the photos…so enjoy this last stand, live from the Tractor Tavern(ok, 2weeks later, but eh?!)…

Noise for the Needy 2013 ~ Ballard Style

Well, I can’t believe it had been over a year since I had last shot a music gig…my last outing being last years Noise for the Needy benefit – this years, was just the impetus I needed to go back out – as I have shot it every year since I got my first dSLR in 2008. I felt great, it was challenging, it was a bit back breaking, and it made me itch for it it all a bit, again…

That all said – the reason I go out every year for NFTN, is that it feels good, it’s for a good cause – and great people all get together to make it happen. Simply put, it’s a great thing to be part of. This years like the others supports a local charity – this year it was the Ballard Food Bank, thus all the shows were at Ballard venues – and I volunteered to shoot the weekend shows at the Tractor Tavern. It was going to be dark, I knew, but all considered it was the venue in which I knew I could make it work…

Before I show off this years set, reminisce – 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Now, the bands that were covered included Pretty Broken Things, Case Studies, Horse Feathers on Saturday the 22nd, and C-Leb & the Kettle Black, Cracker Factory, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown Sunday the 22rd. By far the most fun to shoot was Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown closing the show on Sunday…but they were all great fun, offering unique looks, and great music.

Long Lost: Beach House frames from the 2010 Vampire Weekend show that didn’t happen…

It was a what, 2 hour show? A show that never had a headliner, as the lead for Vampire Weekend lost his voice. But alas, we were treated to a couple quite good opening acts – first the Dum Dum Girls, then Beach House – they almost could have headlined in my opinion… For whatever reason, I never got to publishing this set…but heck, it was time to dig through the archives ~ enjoy!

Concert Photography: Imogen Heap & friends at the Paramount…she's one cool lady…

Imogen Heap came to town almost 2weeks ago – and she did so in a fashion for a big musician, I rarely see…She came out to introduce each opening set – in her street clothes, pre hair/makeup…as herself. There is something there, that really sets her apart.

On top of that, she brought out a local music ensemble group as the lead off set – Sintonía, followed by her billed opener, Geese, and then one of her accompanying musicians, gave the final lead in set to hers, Ben Christophers…and of course then it was Imogen herself, in all of her lanky, prancing, crazy haired madness…incuding in much of her set, supporting instrumentation, etc from the openers on stage again. All this to a packed theatre at the Paramount…loved this show…

New Foxy Shazam CD – featuring cd image…

Primed to take the world by storm – Foxy Shazam just released their self-titled major label CD via Warner Bros this month…and I have the pleasure of having one of my photos on the CD itself!

Corinne Bailey Rae at the Moore & my little Rebel's swan song…

She’s so pretty and adorable – she was always smiling in between songs – and the audience responded…it was a unique connection she had to the crowd and they to her…

This was also the swan song for my little rebel last week – which has worked tirelessly for me taking pictures where it was consistently outclassed by photographers around us…I think we did some pretty good work together…

So cheers…I raise my glass to my palm sized work horse…and to Ms Corinne Bailey Rae…who was simply gorgeous.

Wilco Wednesday…

Wilco @ The Paramount Theatre Wilco visited the Paramount Theatre to a full house Wednesday, sold out standing room only crowd…

It was fun, it was crowded, even in a full up photo pit amongst 9 or so photogs…it was a bit mad – I lost my photo pass before they even came on…thankfully I am acquainted with the security at the Paramont/Moore and they saw my pass at the top of the night – note always make friends w/security! – I was a bit off kilter all night…but it is what it is, and the music was superior as you might expect from this group of pure musicians…

2009 – a year in review

I started looking back on this year, particularly regarding shooting shows, and realized it’s been a landmark year! What had been a passion of intense interest, blossomed.

To be succint, this year I started shooting shows more regularly for 2 online music sites – in March, I became a contributing photographer for LiveDaily.com, and in October, for backbeatseattle.com.

It was the push I needed to get to shows on a more regular basis, and shoot for more than just a whim…assignments with a photopass.

For me, I needed something specifically to do, or it just is something I would do on rare occasion, when the rare opportunities presented for bands or friends I knew. Similar to last year how I started photographing for the Phinney Neighborhood Association – it gives me purpose and push to be out there.

Anywho, as I said, it’s been a banner year. I’ve gotten to hear and see some great live acts, capture some gorgeous moments, and really refine my skills at a pace I had yet to experience.

And let’s face it, it’s kind of cool to go up and say: “Hi, I’m on the list for a photo pass…”
