Pretty in Pink – or rather Black…

It’s been a while, probably, since you heard or saw, or even thought about the band, The Psychedelic Furs…

Yes, the answer to on Facebook friends question: They are still alive…

Seriously though, they are a group, that whilst playing the songs from their heyday, harks back to why New Wave music, etc, was so cool…and is. Because it sounds great.

The guys, still in relatively fine form, are back…alas, all dressed in black w/no backdrop or stage lights – thanks(not), but at least good front lighting to capture some of the fun…

Believe it or not, the drummer was actually the most well lit of the bunch!

They are currently on tour with Happy Mondays, coming to a theatre near you…

I caught up with them at one of the tours inagural shows at the Moore…

Bat for Lashes in Black & White

…Simple, stark, a bit grainy, dramatic…

I think this describes her music, the show, and the final images, processed here to black & white…

I don’t do a pure b/w process much these days…but it seemed more than called for, to illustrate Bat for Lashes…a literal lack of light…lot’s of grain…at first I thought, the images were trash…

Don’t get me wrong, the show was interesting, packed, sweaty, and pushed to the max…but the images…just weren’t wow, on initial review…

Then, a bug in the ear, re: black and white treatment, and I am like, you think? I try not to use black and white as a crutch…but sometimes, it’s just the right thing…

The *Spectacular* Flaming Lips

The Lips…The Flaming Lips…wow…who knew????

LOL…well plenty of folks did…I had never seen them live, so I was, to put it mildly, taken a bit by surprise by the sheer “spectacle”…not to mention the the excess energy of their mosh pit–again, who knew???

Ok, let’s be honest, the concept of the name, “The Flaming Lips”, to most people is blatantly obvious…but honestly, and I almost am embarassed to admit it…I never thought about it…but the opening sequence of images on their massive light screen back drop left NOTHING to the imagination, with the glowing, ie “flaming” hotspot between a legs splayed female form……yes, those “lips”, lmao…I guess you just have to hit me over the head with such…and well, they did…not to mention the massive ball of madness that Wayne (lead) enters the opening fray via…………

The Flaming Lips by Elisa Sherman | photosbyelisa.com

The “spectacular” that was The Lips show, was “Flaming” as it were…lol…well maybe excess is a better description…streamers and confetti…and balloon/balls everywhere…

The Flaming Lips by Elisa Sherman | photosbyelisa.com

The Flaming Lips by Elisa Sherman | photosbyelisa.com

…the entire show…massive light backdrop…
The Flaming Lips by Elisa Sherman | photosbyelisa.com

…there was not a let up in the entire evening…not even the more somber version of Taps (yes, the funeral anthem) played in tribute to still passing soldiers…….the spectacular, was unending…The Lips seem a neverending band of bang on energy…perhaps despite the latter day, hippie vibe…or maybe because of it?

The herbal scent was heavy…and much commented on from the stage as well…the fog floating throught the air was not just from machines……just saying…

Altogether a glorious perfect night at the gorgeous Marymoor Park Amphitheatre…with…THE FLAMING LIPS…

Yep, you read it right, 300mm…read, SOUND BOARD shoot…

No Depression Festival 2009 – Live at Marymoor

“No Depression” hosted it’s first ever “No Depression Festival” this year over in Redmond, at the Marymoor Park Amphitheatre this past Saturday, July 11th, 2009…

It was a gorgeous warm day here in the greater Seattle area…and music lovers came out to celebrate and take in this talented line up brought by the folks at “No Depression”, Seattle Theatre Group(STG) and Live Nation…

Much fun, sun and music was had…

Headliners were Gillian Welch, and Sam Bean of Iron & Wine…Sam is a character…and Gilian is gorgeous, and closed the night with the crowd all coming up front to the stage to absorb the music up close and personal…

Marymoor Park is a gorgeous venue…trees in the background, and green all around…that is why we refer to hereabouts as the emerald city!

The show stealer was probably Justin Townes Earle with his southern charm and humor…skinny tall and animated, he was great fun to shoot!

Don't shoot the bass player…Noise for the Needy 2009

That’s right…don’t shoot the bass player…this was the edict on the headliner for the first of 2 gigs I shot this weekend, both at Neumo’s supporting the Noise for the Needy 2009 Festival…

The request was an odd one, security crossed it’s eyes! but alas pretty easy to accomplish as she was stage opposite of most all the ‘togs…though I think she may be in the back ground of one my images of the lead guitarist…

Altogether it was lots of fun, met some interesting people…this was the second year in a row I shot some of the Noise for the Needy shows; last year as a volunteer for the NFTN group, and this year covering it for LiveDaily.com…It’s for a great cause and it’s great to see all the people in the Seattle music scene and beyond, coming out for it!

Kate Voegele visits the Emerald City!

Our city is now sparkling in the sun…and a bit warm! Kate Voegele and her band of talented musicans visited Seattle on her “Lift Me Up!” tour supporting her CD “A Fine Mess”…

All the squeeing girls – her music’s demographic were out, early and lined up…very excitable…I was surprised! and old….likely the oldest non parent in the crowd, err…

Anywho, Kate, a frequent guest star on the popular drama “One Tree Hill” is on tour, and hit our city during a bit of a hot streak! It was more than a bit warm at Neumo’s, the venue where she played…but alas, the crowd, with all of it’s youthful energy, triumphed over the stifling heat…As did Kate and co…

She is a gorgeous young woman, and a pleasure to capture in frame…

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears at the Tractor Tavern…

So, I was asked to shoot Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears recently…they are all the buzz apparently in musicland…

They played here, opening for “Lucero” at the Tractor Tavern over in Ballard this past Friday kicking off the Memorial Day weekend…a sold out show…

They have a very cool vibe, and you could tell there were many in attendance specifically there to see them…which is always an impressive sign for an opener…

Scott Weiland…thoughtful and sans bubbles…….

Sigh…there were bubbles…but alas I was shooting the first 3 (3.5 according to security, 2.5 accordcing to me, lol)…not the last 3…if only…

Anywho, it was a much different Scott than I experienced in ’07 at the sold out Velvet Revolver show (sorry no pics,I was just an uber fan up front;) This go round, he is supporting his solo CD “Happy” in Galoshes…he is still unique and a very worthy man to come out and see live…never a disappointment…and I believe he and STP will be continuing their reunited goodness after this brief set of solo dates…Solo show included a couple STP hits most notably Interstate Love Song towards the back end of the set…and bubbles…bubbles, are they the new “it” thing over the fog at shows?????

Anywho, sans bubbles, here are a few of the images from the show…posted at livedaily.com:

Rocco DeLuca…and the Burden

Dobro extraordinare Rocco DeLuca and accompanying drummer Ryan Carman visited Seattle this past Tuesday headlining as Rocco DeLuca & the Burden…supporting the latest release “Mercy”.

Does it count as a backing band, when there is only the drummer? I guess it does!

Regardless of all of that…it was a super fun show to shoot…not in any massively photographic way…more in an interpersonal one…

First I met other photographers and fans…we talked a lot of about what got us into music, and into photography…we were all there, up front with passes, but very cool with each other…it was a no pit, no rules venue…so the “first three, no flash” rule was not in anyway followed. Well probably the no flash for the other than fans w/their point and shoots…

Anyways…I was a bit worried as I had set myself up in front(of course–I got there early and was actually numero uno in line) slightly off from the original set up…but that’s just the opener, and it was hard to tell what Rocco’s positioning would be. When all came to be, his mic stand ended up almost directly in front of me, but tilted away—so there was a ray of hope;) The bad bad place to be is usually dead center/and/or in front of the mic stand…kills every shot and you have to wait for them to step back…

Luckily, like I said it was actually set at an angle to myself…and the positioning I had actually also allowed me a perfectly clear line of sight and close proximity to the drum set up…so in a way, I had the very best spot…Usually drummers are (1)too far away, and (2) blocked by both other equipment and band members…not this night…And Rocco, he backed away quite a bit from the mic really allowing a lot of angles on him…even if he appears all scrunched faced and shrugged over more often than not as he jams out on the steel guitar…it’s the case where you just have to wait for the “moments” as there are…they come eventually…amongst many of ick faced frame…wait for it, and it will come…the fleeting glance up with a rare peacful look…a bit of light flickering down through the foggy atmosphere highlighting the intense passion…it’s there…

And the drummer Ryan…totally completed the sound. Rocco is very passionate on his vocals and playing…and the drum completed the rythm…so even with out the bass player (that I think is what actually completes the “Burden” as it were) the sound was more than enough to fill the ears.

The music was much more robust, fuller, passionate and rocking than I anticipated from such an artist…who I had never seen live previously…

In capturing in frame…a dark venue, pretty tough to shoot…spent a while in my spot up front then roamed the floor for a bit to pick up some different angles…there was also a balcony, but I didn’t get anything I loved from up there…but it was nice to just have options…

Altogether, what could have been a total bust, ended up being a pretty fun evening…
