Occupy Seattle: global day of action, Rally at Westlake Park 10-15-2011

Occupy Seattle at Westlake Park 10-15-2011 (Elisa Sherman)I went back to see how the “occupation” was doing – here in Seattle, this Saturday, 10-15-2011. This date in particular is marked as a day when occupations everywhere, made a major push.

Without going into the politics of it, this made me think and reinforce why & what I am doing, going out and capturing images. There are lot’s of images being taken, made, posted, etc. There are lot’s of stories being told.

My full collection will be accumulated here on a page I made dedicated to the occupation – http://photosbyelisa.com/occupy-seattle

In my images, I am not after the tactical struggles of the occupation, nor the grandeur of the masses. Part of my image selection process is in search of the why and what – what is the occupation looking for, what is it standing for? I am focusing on faces, and signs, and messages in my search for this. The answers to that, are part of the story I am trying to tell. The other part, is something I always try to show & tell in my images, the part that I call: chasing bliss. More succinctly, the search for joy, beauty passion and peace – and that revolution, or fighting for something, can be beautiful, it can be the pursuit of that bliss the occupiers seek. Perhaps that isn’t entirely within “photojournalistic” standards – but then, I’m not working for anyone. I am just using something I know how to do – trip the shutter, to ask questions, and tell a story.

If you are looking for images of arrests, taking over the streets, or pictures that capture the volume (or not volume at intervals) of people that are gathering – there are many images of those circulating, by some great photographers, and photojournalists.

For me, locally, one of the guys that inspired me to take my camera out to caputure images – has himself, captured some phenomenal images of what it is like on the ground, some of the beauty and the struggles – that story is also very compelling – check out Geoffrey Gribbin’s images on BiPolarImages.com – they really are something.

Another, an image in particular that I wish I had gotten – is the one featured – by Joshua Trujillo – on the Seattle PI online. It’s an image that in particular captures one of the statements that are being made my the occupiers.

And from the heart of where it started, not so local, there are also some great images from Occupy Wall Streets taking of Time Square yesterday, here by Phillip Stearns. Occupy Seattle at Westlake Park 10-15-2011 (Elisa Sherman) The impact of the movement is clearly captured here in the largess of the scenes.

That is all to say, there is a lot out there to see, there are many stories to be told, and opinions to be had.

Technically, I am using a couple different approaches with my 5d2, using mainly the 70-200 2.8, wide open, to see what I see at a distance, at points, and in particular purposefully blurring the background to focus soley on the subject ignoring the background. As well, almost in contrast, using the 15mm fisheye to shoot at hip or 7ft level, whatever I am walking by, to bend and emphasize images through the viewfinder in a way that makes you see them differently or more clearly even.

In post, I am using a heavy lomo style of saturation and burning of the edges to further emphasize the subjects and focus the story with some intensity.

Anywho – here is more of that story I have to tell…from October 15th, at Westlake…

Thievery Corporation at the Moore Theatre 9-12-2011

This last week I got to revisit one of the acts I first officially photographed – Thievery Corporation! (2009 images here) Their shows are a whirling spectacular of music, fabulous singers, and incredible musicians.

Shootin' Country: Little Big Town at the Showbox Market 8-22-2011

Yep, you heard me – country. I shoot pretty much anything, from death metal, rock, singer songwriter, dance/electronic, pop, to yeah, I guess, country. It’s not my first country-ish gig, have shot some alt-country slash americana previously – but it’s not often, and deserves mention.

A big thank you to Little Big Town for being visually fun to shoot – they made me a fan (I’m easy) by simply giving me good image.

Noise for the Needy 2011

For the 4th year in a row, this past June,  I photographed the Noise for the Needy festival & events – a great local benefit organization for sure. Whether you can work a table, sing (play), attend as a fan & buy drinks(seriously! lol – a good time is always had), or photograph, its a great set of events to be a part of.

I don’t know if the images are like all the other music images or if they are special because of what the community is coming together to do? Regardless – it’s a beautiful thing. This year, the festival proceeds benefit Real Change – something if you walk around downtown Seattle, you should be well familiar with.

To see my images from previous years – 2008, 2009, 2010.

This year – I covered Metal Night (yeah, you heard me) and ironically enough, the next night I covered happened to be dance music – so 2 ends of the spectrum – and no “singer songwriter” bits to be seen at either…not that people didn’t write their music, but you know what I mean…I also captured images from last March’s kickoff event – which was a bit of swirling lights, dancers, electronic beats and fun.

Anywho – some of my favorite images from this year –

INXS and a glass of wine

Starting this year, INXS has been on tour again after 3.5yr hiatus (yeah, I was counting – last stop for me was “The Soo” – Sault Ste Marie, July 2007 – so make that 4yrs for this fangirl). This slightly damp night, July 17th, in the great northwest, our band, INXS dropped into town to kick off the US dates of their “Original Sin” tour, delivering a suited up round of hits at the Chateau Ste Michelle Winery in Woodinville.

In reality, I was supremely excited for this show, for more than just the uber fan obviousness. This is because, they are the band that originally inspired me to take photos at music shows, and this was my first credentialed chance to click them with a proper camera, and lenses, drop that shutter, and get them all nice and sharp. Sadly, that usually means, just the “first 3 songs, no flash”, because that’s what it is like to photograph a band with a photo pass – we usually miss those later show moments – the potential iconic moments, the finale wave to the audience, etc.

In all it’s a full circle for me, back photographing(with a pass this time, rather than on the down low!) the band I love. The icing, as it were, was when I was asked to shoot “back stage” (really not back) the .com winner meet and greet, and to also shoot midset Original Sin version of “Beautiful Girl” where Pat Monahan joined the band on stage. After shooting, I obviously(ha ha) went to my seat and watched the entire end of the set – it was such a fun and nostalgic show. I am not the same non-groupie from yesteryear, but I do still love the music and the band. Every word, I can breath and sing along with. It just puts a smile on my face. To everyone I met, and got to hang out with this night – xoxo – so much fun! To the band, etc – you were great, many thanks.

For all of my fellow INXS fans – these are for you.

xoxo

Lifehouse live at the Showbox Sodo 3-5-2011 (concert photography blog)

On a rescheduled date from last fall, Lifehouse dropped into Seattle, this time at the Showbox Sodo – to a packed house of rapt fans. The lights were bright, coming in bursts almost blinding – the band was one of my faves to shoot, despite those bright lights(can’t really complain) playing havoc with my light meter!

Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band at the Showbox Sodo 2-22-2011 (concert photography blog)

I got to shoot Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band a couple weeks ago at the Showbox Sodo – great show – and he looked so happy – good times!

An interesting night at the Sodo – I used primarily the 70-200, the 24-70 only sparingly, and the lens I am learning to love – the 15mm fisheye for some atmosphere.
